D/deaf friendly business in devon and in the UK

 Well in an aim to be positive which suits my mood after this beautiful morning, okay so I love a bit of frost and bright sunshine especially if it's bright enough the sun makes it appear warmer than it is so I can eat breakfast outside, I'm going to look at the businesses thatare easy to deal with if you have hearing loss.


Veysey's Butchers Cullompton

WOW not only is their meat absolutely delicious, amazingly well priced and local but they also provide a deaf friendly service both instore and for home deliveries.  I can't fault this store at all and would recommend them without a second thought.


The Healthy Root

This is a market stall selling fruit, vegetables, eggs, honey etc and the staff are incredible.  Not only are they deaf friendly but the produce tastes incredible, it's fresh and lasts well.  I also love that it's local produce and they have an exceptionally wide variety of produce.  They now offer deliveries too which has been a godsend.


Sainsbury Ottery St Mary

This store and online provides an exemplery service that is deaf friendly. I can't fault them or their wide range of dairy free products.  The staff in store are actively aware of and work towards noticing someone strugglign to hear and then go above and beyond to make the customer feel at ease and do things in their own time, repeating as much as necessary to make the process go as it should.


British Gas

They may not be the cheapest but the service is fantastic, excellent call out when things go wrong and they resolve everything using either live chat or twitter which makes everything so much easier than phoning up.


Natwest

Great online and in bank service in Honiton. Again I can't fault their live chat, video calls or twitter support when things go a little wrong.  The staff in honiton are highly aware of disabilities and go above and beyond to support those customers.


Amazon

I know this isn't the best place to support but their deaf customer service is brilliant, having explained I couldn't contact a third party through phone they sorted everything for me.  This is the kind of service I really appreciate and will make me use a company more.

A conclusion

 In my last post I discussed the difficulties of comunicating in hospitals, today I'm going to extend that and talk about rehab after surgery. After the sucessful femur surgery my caree was moved to rehab at a smaller hospital.  Unfortunately in rehab "care" isn't provided and that made life difficult.  Her legs were going uncreamed and as a result drying out and splitting open, meds weren't cut up so they could be easily swallowed and went untaken, meals weren't soft palate friendly and "it's a hospital we cater en masse not for individual requirements" was repeated to me on a daily basis, support for drinking with arthritic hands didn't happen, the list of inadequate care for someone who was unable to care for themselves was long and the daily fight over it was stressful. Remembrance

 I'm rather late with this post and to be honest I've had a different one in mind for several weeks I just haven't had the time to write it.  As any carer will atest there is always something that comes up and prevents you from doing the things you want to do but here I am better late than never as the saying goes. Remembrance in the UK is about wearing Poppies, Observing a two minute silence and think about the Fallen and Injured armed forces who have fought in wars to give us our freedom.  War Memorials, the act of remembrance and Poppies all originated at least a hundred years ago.  It was an opportunity to remember those who died on the battle fields of WW1/The Great War/The War to end all Wars and who returned unable to work, fend for themselves physically due to injury or who suffered mentally from the horrors of war.  As time went on WW2 was included in the act of Rembrance, there are few left who remember WW1 but there are plenty left who remember WW2, w...

Self Care

 This entry is inspired by a new hashtag on twitter #WhatMakesACarerCry, every Thursday carers tweet what upsets them using the hash tag.  I decided that I was going to go with Self Care.   As far as I'm concerned this is the worse phrase on the planet.  If I had the time, money and the thing I wanted to do was legal there is no reason why I can't do something for myself, I don't need a label or reason for doing it other than I enjoy it.  I shouldn't have to justify it to someone else either so as far as I'm concerned if self care involves, reading, craft, walking, photography whatever, I don't need a label for it I do it because I enjoy it.  For this reason I see no reason whatosever why the term Self Care was ever invented.   As a deaf person I can see how a few things may come under self care but in a different meaning to what I've seen it used as recently, I'm defining it as care for my physical health:  Rest: If I'm lipreading or tr...
